Teri:  my son is a senior in high school, with adhd and dyslexia and has had an IEP since 3rd grade. the district is now saying he will not graduate. is there anything I can do so he can graduate in May?

  1. I am not sure of all of the circumstances but my son did not officially graduate from high school. The school allowed him to “walk with the class” so that he could be part of the process and he really liked that. He did not get his official diploma until a year later because they needed more time to meet his IEP goals. Remember that graduation is a ” change of placement” and the school is not longer obligated under the law to provide special education services to your child.

  2. How did he get his far with out enough credits, etc? Did he attend a summer program to try to catch up with credits? Was he flagged last year due to not having enough credits, grades, etc? For now–what are your goals? If graduation is a goal, look seriously at the reason he is not graduating and know what his rights and responsibilities are. He may end up with an online program to finish graduation as some schools are doing such?
