Goals: DOES THE LAW REQUIRE MULTIPLE GOALS?

Penny:  Is it the law, federally or in any state, that requires multiple goals be written? My ISD is requiring all IEP’s include at least 2 goals, regardless of disability. So for example, a student qualifies with a Learning Disability in reading comprehension. My ISD is requiring me to write 2 goals (each with 2 short term objectives). They are interpreting the law as “goals”, nor “goal(s)”. Please help me clarify. I live in the state of Michigan.

  1. Penny –

IDEA has no requirement regarding a minimum level of goals (beyond one). An individual state may, but I doubt it. I didn’t find any indication that Michigan did. You can try calling your state Department of Education.
