Lisa:  Child is diagnosed with IBS. All medical diagnosis and signed documentation paperwork from pediatrician submitted to school. Despite this, is school now allowed to insist that the school doctor speak directly w/ the pediatrician? Pediatrician is questioning need for it, among many reasons, for confidentiality issues. Concerned the school is “fishing” for a reason to reject the request by insisting that their doctor speak to the pediatrician, outside the normal 504 meeting process where all parties can be a part of the conversation. Is school allowed to insist on such a conversation?

  1. They can insist, but you do not have to give permission. You could tell them that if they will give you a copy of their questions, you will get a written response from your doctor. This will show that you are trying to work with them, but not allowing a “fishing trip” with your doctor.
