Stacey:  If a child’s disability is in reading and the school district has a reading specialist. Can the parent request a pre and post reading assessment?

  1. YEs send a letter to the principal and/or the spec ed director certified mail and request a response in 5 business days. once you meet you need to sign the schools eval consent form. This form is the item that starts the clock ticking for the school to get the assessment done in 60 days. I have done this with my youngest son and the assessment provided some excellent ideas on how to help him with reading. If you don’t agree with the assessment you may request an outside professional assessment at the school’s request.

  2. Stacey –

You can request anything! Of course the school is more likely to agree if your request is reasonable.

Requesting periodic reading assessment sounds perfectly reasonable, and has even become the norm in many district for disabled and non-disabled students alike.
