Tests and Assessments: MODIFICATIONS FOR TESTS

Scott: Should district required assessment be modified for sped students if the student is going to have to test without modifications on state standardized test? RA lines up with state test. If you change RA then how would you assess sped student fairly? You need to know if sped student is learning content.

  1. One could reason that it should also work the other way around, that the student is receiving only the accommodations that he/she receives on statewide tests when he/she participates in district-wide testing. That way the results, like you state, “line up.”

I would say, though, that this is best practice rather than a hard and fast requirement. And there are probably some situations where not following this would make sense.

  2. Scott –

With regard to “statewide” standardized testing, most students with disabilities are provided accommodations (like extra time, breaks, use of certain supports, etc.) as opposed to modifications. Students who take a modified test are usually taking what’s called an alternative assessment or portfolio assessment.

So I’m going to assume that you are talking about accommodations rather than modifications, though my thinking could reasonably apply to either.

For a student to receive an accommodation on the statewide test, a student should need and be using that accommodation on district wide and classroom tests. I believe that all states require this.
