Transportation: SCHOOL TRANSPORT, AIDES NOT TRAINED TO CARE FOR SPECIAL NEEDS

Emoly:  My 6 yr old autistic son is put on a single bus with 6 children that have different needs. one girl is blind. One boy has medical problems and is in wheel chair. my son is on a bus for an hour half each way while stopping at 3 schools. The women are older and not trained. my son kicks and can get unruly. Each child has special needs and they are transported like cattle to save costs.

  1. See my response to Jenne for general comments. However, it sounds like your child’s situation may call for more drastic action.
    1 – request by email that they start videotaping these bus rides.
    2 – meet with the director of transportation and special education ASAP. Get in there to talk to them tomorrow if you can, separately or together.
    3 – tell them this situation needs their immediate attention.
    4 – after each meeting or email, wait exactly 3 business days. If no answer, escalate. Work your way up the ladder. Record the response (if any) that you get at each rung. Based on your description, my crystal ball tells me you are not likely to achieve a real change, in which case, you
    5 – schedule a private meeting with the Bd of Ed.
    6 – if you don’t mind going public, make a petition, both online and paper. Present it at the next Board of Education meeting.
