Jenny:  I have heard that an IEP plan was met about and written for my 3 year old daughter. My ex was present but I never heard anything about it . I disagree with the recommendations . What can I do ?

  1. If you put into writing your objection the school cannot proceed with the IEP unless you have no educational rights.

  2. In my role as a school psychologist, I encounter this situation on occasion. Do you share custody of your daughter and do you and your ex share the decision-making for educational issues? If so, my first recommendation would be to contact the agency that completed the evaluation on your daughter, request copies of all evaluation documents, and make sure that you and your contact information are listed in their records. Make sure to request that you be notified of any meetings that occur in the future. If, after reviewing the evaluation records, you have questions about the decision that was made you could request that another IEP meeting take place to allow you the opportunity to participate in the discussion.

    • In the case of not knowing who completed the evaluation or anything. Would my husband be able to go to his son’s school and request copies of the current IEP. He isn’t disputing the fact there is a need for one he would like to be up to speed on what his son’s levels of learning are.
