Dyslexia: READING ON GRADE LEVEL 50% OF GRADE?!

Angela: Yes, he *should* be reading grade level, but it takes time to remediate severe dyslexia. I asked about alt. grading method, and was told it wasn’t possible. If he was physically disabled, they couldn’t fail him in PE for not running a mile. How is this different? What are my options? Redo the IEP and be more demanding?

  1. Look up SMART goals on the this site. Goals should be measurable by deadlines agreed upon by the IEP team in summary. Children with learning differences are able to learn if the proper support is in place. The difference between passing a child who is unable to run in P.E. and passing a child who needs assistance in learning how to learn is you can get meaningful employment without having to run a mile. It is almost impossible to obtain meaningful employment if you haven’t learned to read.
