Sarah:  Is it required by law that the school re evaluate my children who have been diagnosed with autism in order for them to receive an autism based IEP in the state of Georgia?

  1. what if my son is testing for autism and has behavioral and the school does not have resources for him. also they have a van that picks him up and he doesn’t want to go so fights to get on. and they telling me that if hes not on in 3 minuets they will suspend him and give him 3 days of OSS

    • timmy – Every time I hear about suspensions I ask about FBA’s (Functional Behavior Assessments) and then follow up with asking if the threatened suspension is covered as part of his/her Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).

If you son has autism he should have an IEP. I hope this is the case. If not, request an evaluation and get him an IEP – address his behaviors in the IEP.

I am so tired of schools using suspensions and other aversives to control behaviors!!! …although suspensions, in some cases, are creating the behavior, especially when the child gets to stay home to play Minecraft all day.
