National Veterans and Military Family Month

picture of flag and poppies from clyde boyd middle schoolYou receive help from many people every day — bus drivers, teachers, cafeteria workers — and they appreciate it when you say "thank you" for their help.

But there is one group of people you may not even think about thanking — the men and women in the military who serve all over the world.

Thank you Clyde Boyd Middle School!

Just in time for the holidays, the 200 letters and pictures you sent are already on their way to U.S. military personnel around the world.

In this issue of the Special Ed Advocate we say thank you to military family members for all that you do and all that you give. You will find information and resources to help when advocating for exceptional family members, and ways for everyone to say "thank you" to our troops.

We hope you will forward this issue to other friends, families, or colleagues.

Military & DoD Special Education

Children whose parents are active in any of the branches of the military often have a rather non-traditional educational experience.

Although military children may not be educated in the U.S., they are still entitled to a Free, Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).

Military Child with Special Needs

Watch the Wrightslaw video on YouTube for military families of children with special needs, those who work with military families, and non-military families who are moving to another school district.

Learn what your child is entitled to - a "comparable IEP" and differences between the Dept of Defense Instructions and IDEA 2004.

Kids Take Action: Thank You Letters to our Troops!

The Wrightslaw Team says a special "thank you" to Ms. Flood's 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at Clyde Boyd Middle School. Your Veterans Day Assembly letter and art project was a wonderful way to thank and support our troops.

We have hundreds of your drawings to post! You will find them coming soon to the Wrightslaw Hero Art page.
