From: "Suzanne Heath" To: Subject: Re: Q RESEARCH BASED INSTRUCTION Date: Thursday, September 29, 2005 10:05 AM There is never any reason to use reading instruction that is NOT based on research. We have immense amounts of research telling us how children learn to read and what must be done to teach them to read. It is reasonable to expect that all reading instruction be based upon this research. The research also tells us that waiting for a child to fail is unnecessary and most often damaging to the child. Preventing Early Reading Failure ". . . we now have tools to reliably identify the children who are likely destined for early reading failure. Most importantly, . . . we can say with confidence that if we intervene early, intensively, and appropriately, we can provide these children with the early reading skills that can prevent almost all of them from ever entering the nasty downward spiral . . ." http://www.aft.org/pubs-reports/american_educator/issues/fall04/reading.htm Other articles http://www.wrightslaw.com/info/read.index.htm Sue Heath =================== > Comments: > Question on 'scientifically researched based' instruction. > > My child is in 1st grade, special ed & inclusion class.
