The school said he would have to have an &#8220;aide assessment.&#8221;\u00a0 What is that?\u00a0 I&#8217;ve never heard of such a thing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We&#8217;ve never heard of an &#8220;aide assessment&#8221; before assigning an aide to a child.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on your child&#8217;s unique needs, your child&#8217;s IEP team <strong>that includes the parent<\/strong> is supposed to determine:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the present levels of academic achievement and functional performance<\/li>\n<li>what special education services, related services, and supplementary services<\/li>\n<li>any accommodations and\/or modifications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The team then determines placement.<\/p>\n<p>The IDEA includes a mainstreaming or &#8220;least restrictive environment&#8221; policy that requires school districts to educate children with disabilities in regular classrooms with their non-disabled peers, and in the school they would attend if not disabled, to the maximum extent appropriate.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The general education classroom is assumed to be the appropriate placement unless the team can cite reasons why the child cannot be mainstreamed with related services and supplementary services &#8212; like an aide.<\/p>\n<p>Go to the website of your State Department of Education, search the site for &#8220;aide assessment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a quick Google search, links were to &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcoe.org\/HR\/InstAideExam.shtm\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Instructional Aide Assessment Test<\/span><\/a>&#8221; like this one: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcoe.org\/HR\/InstAideExam.shtm\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">http:\/\/www.tcoe.org\/HR\/InstAideExam.shtm<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t find anything, call the State Department of Education.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yellowpagesforkids.com\/help\/seas.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">http:\/\/www.yellowpagesforkids.com\/help\/seas.htm <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ask them if the state requires districts to do an &#8220;aide assessment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Think about requesting the district policy about requiring an aide assessment.<\/p>\n<p>You will often find that this policy is <a href=\" https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/blog\/?p=8237\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">&#8220;unwritten&#8221; &#8230; or non-existent<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I asked for an aide for my son.
