Ciolfi, Legal Director of the JustChildren Program at the Legal Aid Justice Center, Charlottesville,\u00a0 is concerned about the appalling new AMOs released last week by the Virginia Department of Education. \u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doe.virginia.gov\/news\/news_releases\/2012\/jul24.shtml\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">VDOE Announces New Annual Reading &amp; Math Objectives<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doe.virginia.gov\/news\/news_releases\/2012\/jul24.shtml\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">http:\/\/www.doe.virginia.gov\/news\/news_releases\/2012\/jul24.shtml<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These objectives represent a full retreat from the concept of No Child Left Behind.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it doesn&#8217;t look like Virginia expects the proficiency gaps to shrink much at all in six years.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the gap between &#8220;All students&#8221; and &#8220;economically disadvantaged&#8221; students doesn&#8217;t change at all.<\/p>\n<p>(VA DOE does not provide a target for non-economically disadvantaged students, so it&#8217;s hard to figure out what group to compare them to.)<\/p>\n<p>The gap between white and black students only decreases by 2 points.<\/p>\n<p>It is disturbing to see that, six years from now, we expect only 49% of students with disabilities and 59% of economically disadvantaged students to pass the math tests.<\/p>\n<p>We can only imagine the impact of these new objectives on vulnerable students.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Angela shares the link to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.advocacyinstitute.org\/blog\/?p=155\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">good summary by Candace Cortiella<\/span><\/a> of the Advocacy Institute. Candace posted on her blog about the new methodology Virginia cooked up for calculating annual measurable objectives (AMOs).<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230;the new AMOs for math (below) paint a dismal picture for Virginia\u2019s underachieving students \u2013 now given the pejorative moniker of \u201cGap Groups.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.advocacyinstitute.org\/blog\/?p=155\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Yes, Virginia, You are a Swing State<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.advocacyinstitute.org\/blog\/?p=155\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">http:\/\/www.advocacyinstitute.org\/blog\/?p=155<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today, August 6, in the Roanoke Times &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.roanoke.com\/editorials\/nuckols\/wb\/312329http:\/\/www.roanoke.com\/editorials\/nuckols\/wb\/312329\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Setting New Academic Expectations<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Christina Nuckols says she feels better when talking to local school leaders, despite the gloomy goals at the state level.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Roanoke Superintendent Rita Bishop is fully aware of the dangers ahead as the nation reconsiders its educational future.<\/p>\n<p><em>I always feared if we dumped No Child Left Behind that we would lose sight of subgroups, she said.
