The proposed IEP accommodations allow her to turn in homework late, with a penalty. We are transition planning for college now.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/images\/istock\/girl.homework.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"413\" height=\"285\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The school says they <strong>cannot make the accommodation<\/strong> for late homework because this would affect Carnegie credits.<\/p>\n<p>Because she has so many after school appointments for medical care and physical therapy, we need accommodations for homework flexibility.<\/p>\n<p>Should we write a 504 plan for these accommodations?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There is no need to write a separate Section 504 Plan.\u00a0 You should be able to include all needed accommodations in your daughter&#8217;s IEP.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Create a Health Care Plan<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Get a full list of the accommodations and interventions that your daughter needs in the course of the day from your doctor. Put these together in the form of a medical management plan or health care plan.\u00a0 Use this plan as the basis of accommodating your daughter in school.<\/p>\n<p>You can use the <span style=\"color: #0066cc;\"><a style=\"color: #0066cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/living-with-diabetes\/parents-and-kids\/diabetes-care-at-school\/written-care-plans\/diabetes-medical-management.html\">model plan the American Diabetes Association<\/a><\/span> has online.\u00a0 Change the plan to reflect your daughter\u2019s needs. Check the model plan for <em>accommodations provided without penalty<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Copy the Word version into your computer.\u00a0 Modify the plan to suit your situation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/living-with-diabetes\/parents-and-kids\/diabetes-care-at-school\/written-care-plans\/diabetes-medical-management.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">http:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/living-with-diabetes\/parents-and-kids\/diabetes-care-at-school\/written-care-plans\/diabetes-medical-management.html<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You already know what the accommodations and interventions are. Use the model form and modify it as best you can. Then ask your doctor what you have left out.<\/p>\n<p>Once the doctor has reviewed it for accuracy and completeness, have him sign the plan.\u00a0 Deliver a copy to the school nurse and the principal.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Recommended Accommodations<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some medical management plans and health care plans include a broad range of accommodations.<\/p>\n<p>Look at all the items that can be included in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/living-with-diabetes\/parents-and-kids\/diabetes-care-at-school\/written-care-plans\/section-504-plan.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">a thorough 504 plan<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/living-with-diabetes\/parents-and-kids\/diabetes-care-at-school\/written-care-plans\/section-504-plan.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">http:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/living-with-diabetes\/parents-and-kids\/diabetes-care-at-school\/written-care-plans\/section-504-plan.html<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>You will see that the model plan states <em>accommodations provided without penalty<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0 Your daughter&#8217;s plan should be adapted to her specific medical condition and needs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/store\/aaieps.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin-left: 10px; float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/bks\/aaiep\/cover300x377.jpg\" width=\"154\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a>Learn about IDEA 2004 requirements for accommodations in the IEP in Chapter 6, p. 51.<br \/>\n<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/store\/aaieps.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Wrightslaw: All About IEPs<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/lite-scripts\/sb\/order.cgi?storeid=*22bd53fa39c4895ba21b011400c7857c4f54f0&amp;dbname=products&amp;itemnum=61&amp;function=add\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 0px solid black; margin: 0px 0px 15px; float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/store\/buy.now.gif\" width=\"72\" height=\"22\" \/><\/a>Print Book<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/lite-scripts\/sb\/order.cgi?storeid=*2230507aa9c40ab9ed1bb11400d7857c4f5416&amp;dbname=products&amp;itemnum=82&amp;function=add\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 0px solid black; margin: 0px 0px 15px; float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/store\/buy.now.gif\" width=\"72\" height=\"22\" \/><\/a>Kindle Edition (mobi)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/lite-scripts\/sb\/order.cgi?storeid=*1c0c40f581e92c4551f7476a402b04f8&amp;dbname=products&amp;itemnum=83&amp;function=add\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 0px solid black; margin: 0px 0px 15px; float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/store\/buy.now.gif\" width=\"72\" height=\"22\" \/><\/a>E-Pub Edition<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Get the School Team On Board<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The school team probably does not understand all that you are doing after school to help your daughter succeed in an advanced program.<\/p>\n<p>If time is no longer available after school, due to increased time needed for homework, then what you have done after school, you will now need to do during school hours.<\/p>\n<p>Once the team understands what they are required to do, and they can see what you are doing after school, they should be more receptive to adjusting homework accommodations.<\/p>\n<p>If the school is unwilling to provide the required accommodations you may need to file a civil rights complaint.<\/p>\n<p>Although the actual complaint is easy to file, I recommend that you contact an attorney who represents parents in special education matters.\u00a0 Ask the attorney to draft the complaint because the important part of the complaint is the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>You may not ask for enough.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Re: Carnegie Credits<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Basically the &#8220;Carnegie&#8221; unit defines the number of contact hours a high school student should have with a teacher. It is a measure of time the student has studied a subject.<\/p>\n<p>Ask the school for their documentation about Carnegie credits limiting disability accommodations.\u00a0 That just does not exist.<\/p>\n<p>It will be interesting to see what they provide.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Update<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This mother followed through with these steps to include a health care plan in the IEP.
