The principal of my school says I was \u201cout voted\u201d because there are more school staff than me as one parent. I\u2019m sure this is not right!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>An IEP team should not \u201cvote\u201d on decisions about your child\u2019s special education program or placement.<\/p>\n<p>This is not consistent with the law about parental participation. Parents should be equal participants in making decisions about their child\u2019s special education program.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/info\/iep.law.appendixa.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">IDEA 1997, Appendix A<\/span><\/a> states \u2013<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe IEP team should work toward consensus, but the public agency has ultimate responsibility to ensure that the IEP includes the services that the child needs in order to receive FAPE. <strong>It is not appropriate to make IEP decisions based upon a majority \u2018vote\u2019.<\/strong>\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>See Question #9. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/info\/iep.law.appendixa.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/info\/iep.law.appendixa.htm<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the FAQs book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/store\/aaieps.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Wrightslaw: All About IEPs<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0 you will find this question:\u00a0 <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Can the IEP team \u2018vote\u2019 for a child\u2019s placement, over the objections of her parents and another team member?<\/em>\u00a0 I\u2019ve copied part of the answer below.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;IEP meetings allow parents and school staff to make joint informed decisions about your child\u2019s IEP. The IEP team should work toward consensus.
