You too may feel the helplessness he felt.<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stop now<\/strong> feeling helpless.\u00a0 <strong>Start now<\/strong> to build a well-developed team devoted to developing effective educational services for your child.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is time to work the process.<\/strong> Here\u2019s how.<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Wrightslaw website<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 Read the article about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/advoc\/articles\/tests_measurements.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">tests and measurements<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 Reread it if you have to. Read it until you can explain to someone else the meaning of your child\u2019s test results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Gather information and work samples from your child\u2019s teacher.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Make a video of your child trying to read.\u00a0 Consider making a video of a typical classmate reading (with the parents\u2019 permission of course).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Start your documentation.\u00a0 Write notes of every conversation you have with a teacher or administrator about your child.\u00a0 Copy every letter you send the teacher or district.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Write to the district requesting evaluation for special education eligibility.\u00a0 Note the date you sent or delivered the letter.\u00a0 Include consent for psycho educational evaluations by the district.\u00a0 This starts the clock on the process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep researching.\u00a0 Learn about dyslexia, ADD, and processing deficits.\u00a0 Read the FETA site information about the eligibility process.\u00a0 Buy or borrow the FETA book.\u00a0 Read it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Write down any questions you have about your child\u2019s learning style.\u00a0 Ask what approaches might be used to teach her effectively.\u00a0 As you get answers, document notes of conversations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Be \u201cpleasantly persistent\u201d.<\/strong> If told the person is too busy to evaluate right now, you can understand, but since you know the school will comply with timeline required by law, you wonder what alternative they will utilize.\u00a0 If you are asked what you want them to do, you can smile and tell them that is why you are so glad they have such knowledgeable people on staff; that you are sure they will have wonderful ideas at the team meeting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be ready, but NEVER threaten, to take the next step<\/strong>.\u00a0 A call to your state Dept. of Education can open many doors.\u00a0 If you do make the call, make your request in the form of a request for help.\u00a0 No not complain about the school or teachers.\u00a0 Such actions undercut your ability to build the team you will need for your child.<\/p>\n<p>Most times, when a school realizes that there are informed family members advocating for a child, they simply do what is necessary and follow the process.\u00a0 When that happens, be gracious and appreciative.
