He has problems with reading and writing.  I\u2019m curious about dyslexia.  What type of doctor can test him?  What tests do they use?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To my knowledge there is not one specific \u201ctest\u201d for dyslexia.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluation is based on the \u201cclinical judgment\u201d of a psychologist, by the way a child tests on a battery of tests.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>How Children Learn to Read&#8230;<!--more--><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>1.  The first thing you need to learn is how children <a href=\"http:\/\/\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">learn to read<\/span><\/a>.  I mean really learn to read. I don\u2019t mean just memorize and word call.<\/p>\n<p>Read anything by Jeanne Chall and Louisa Moats. You can google their name to find out more about them.  You will find books by them in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/bkstore\/bks_index.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Advocate\u2019s Bookstore<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>2. Then look at your child\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/advoc\/articles\/tests_measurements.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">test scores<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Consider these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Has my child received adequate reading instruction?<\/li>\n<li>Where are my child\u2019s deficits in reading?<\/li>\n<li>Does the program being used address those deficits?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3.  Don\u2019t assume a teacher knows how to teach all children to read.<\/p>\n<p>Many teachers do not know how to teach children to read, especially children with dyslexia whose needs are different.
