The camp brought people together who would energize and lead the movement for civil rights protections for themselves and for those who would follow them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c&#8217;Crip Camp&#8217; draws extensively on terrific contemporaneous black-and-white footage shot by a <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/bangordailynews.com\/2020\/02\/27\/news\/midcoast\/maine-filmmakers-helped-revive-long-lost-footage-that-will-appear-in-a-netflix-documentary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collective called the People\u2019s Video Theater<\/a>, for which participants were invited to speak their minds. But even more than those activist videos, \u201cCrip Camp\u201d unfolds from a perspective of lived experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Several Jened alumni became nationally visible activists and resettled around Berkeley, Calif. Judy Heumann had <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1970\/05\/27\/archives\/woman-in-wheel-chair-sues-to-become-teacher.html\">sued for discrimination<\/a> in New York after she was denied a license to teach and became a leader in San Francisco in the 504 Sit-In of 1977, when activists <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1977\/04\/17\/archives\/disabled-in-san-francisco-vow-to-continue-sitin.html\">demanded federal regulations guaranteeing civil rights for the disabled<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ultimately, &#8216;Crip Camp&#8217; has a universal message: <em><strong>Inspirations that begin in youth can lead to radical, world-changing results.<\/strong><\/em> At the end, a number of former campers reunite at the camp\u2019s unprepossessing present-day site.
