She wants to quit. Can we discontinue services?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You ask a good question, one that many parents struggle with.<\/p>\n<p>You need more information before making any decisions about discontinuing services and the IEP.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get an Evaluation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It would be a good idea to have your daughter evaluated by a psychologist in the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>A comprehensive evaluation will give you invaluable information about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>where your daughter is functioning<\/li>\n<li>how much progress she\u2019s made in the special ed program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The evaluator can also help you decide if it\u2019s time to cut the cord to special ed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finding a Qualified Evaluator<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since your daughter&#8217;s problems are related to reading and\/or language, look for an evaluator who has expertise in that area.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Start your search for a qualified evaluator at the website of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA).<\/p>\n<p>The IDA has <a href=\"http:\/\/eida.org\/ida-accredited-provider-directory\/\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">provider lists<\/span><\/a> by state.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eida.org\/ida-accredited-provider-directory\/\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">http:\/\/eida.org\/ida-accredited-provider-directory\/<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Terminating Eligibility?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you do cut the IEP cord, you would be wise to keep your daughter on a Section 504 plan.<\/p>\n<p>Read this article to help you understand the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/info\/bartlett.transition.504.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">benefits of transitioning from an IEP to a 504 plan<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Your daughter is a junior in high school and may want to continue her education after high school.<\/p>\n<p>A current evaluation will be helpful in getting accommodations for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/info\/college.index.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">college or continuing education<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Good luck!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My daughter is an 18 year old junior who misses school because of migraines.
