The House of Delegates will now hear similar legislation (HB1443).<\/p>\n<p>On Monday morning, February 2, 2015, the House Education Committee will consider HB1443.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Please contact your Delegate today<\/strong> <strong>and let them know why it is important they support HB1443.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Advocates like Alex (pictured by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheArcofVA\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Arc of VA<\/span><\/a>) have testified in support of HB1443. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Now the House needs to hear your voice!<\/strong><\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In 2014, the Arc of Virginia requested a review of the use of restraint and seclusion in schools. The Commission on Youth conducted the review. The Virginia Coalition for Students with Disabilities developed extensive public comment. A huge collaborative advocacy effort has continued with the formation of the Virginia Coalition for the Improvement of School Safety (CISS).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/660063074101885\/\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/660063074101885\/<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?151+sum+SB782\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Senate Bill 782<\/span><\/a> has been passed by the Senate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?151+sum+SB782\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">http:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?151+sum+SB782<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?151+sum+HB1443\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">HB1443<\/span><\/a> goes to Committee on February 2.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?151+sum+HB1443\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">http:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?151+sum+HB1443<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bills will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>limit dangerous restraint and seclusion to emergencies threatening serious physical harm and stop their use for activities that threaten no one.<\/li>\n<li>require schools to use preventative strategies and practical de-escalation and evidence-based positive behavioral strategies.<\/li>\n<li>require prompt parental notice, preferably within 24 hours if restraints must be used in an emergency.
