Are they required to know the disability and be able to accommodate that disability?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #000000;\">need for training and support<\/span> applies to all school personnel, including bus drivers and school bus aides.<\/p>\n<p>School bus drivers are expected to handle children with different needs related to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cognitive concerns<\/li>\n<li>behavioral issues<\/li>\n<li>physical impairment<\/li>\n<li>medical conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A school bus driver may need training in <em>behavior management techniques<\/em> for children with autism and emotional disturbances.<\/p>\n<p>The bus driver or aide may also need training from physical and occupational therapists about <em>how to position a medically fragile child<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The school nurse could train transportation personnel about <em>how to transport a child with health impairments<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">NHTSA Training Guidelines for Transportation Personnel<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has a training module for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/people\/injury\/buses\/UpdatedWeb\/topic_9\/index.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Transportation of Children with Special Needs<\/span><\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The module advises bus drivers and attendants to &#8220;know your students and what they need.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Guidelines<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have transportation personnel who work with a student at the IEP meeting to learn more about a child&#8217;s transportation needs.<\/p>\n<p>The school bus driver\/attendant should know the characteristics of the disability and the equipment the student needs and uses.<\/p>\n<p>Check each student&#8217;s ITP (Individual Transportation Plan) for special instructions or precautions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The IEP should provide the necessary specificity so the driver, school, parent and student know what services to expect.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NHTSA also has a training module on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/people\/injury\/buses\/UpdatedWeb\/topic_9\/page6.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Emergency Situations<\/span><\/a> when transporting children with special needs.<\/p>\n<p>Parents should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check your state regulations and any school policies about transporting children with special needs<\/li>\n<li>Discuss your child&#8217;s transportation safety needs with the IEP Team<\/li>\n<li>Document in writing any transportation issues and concerns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your child has transportation needs, ask the school bus driver to join the IEP team.<\/p>\n<p>Any support and training for teachers and other school personnel (i.e., bus drivers and aides) must be written in your child&#8217;s IEP.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>More Resources<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/advoc\/articles\/support.bardet.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Support and Training for School Personnel in IDEA 2004<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/blog\/?p=2707\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Restraints and Safety Devices on the School Bus<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/blog\/?p=5839\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">When Transportation in the IEP is Not Provided<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/info\/iep.develop.popup.resp8.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Do All Children with Disabilities Have a Right to Transportation as a Related Service?<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/blog\/?p=10637\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">School Says Transportation Will Be Provided But Only One Way<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/blog\/helpline-topics-t\/\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Q and A on Transportation<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Database Questions: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/blog\/database-questions-topics-l-z\/#trans\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Transportation<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are school bus drivers and bus aides who transport special needs children required to have training?
