The doctor &#8216;<em>never told me&#8217;<\/em> that he would <strong>not<\/strong> be the one testing.<\/p>\n<p>I was surprised when a school psychologist who works with the neuropsych gave the tests. Is this what&#8217;s supposed to happen?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If your child needs a neuropsychological evaluation, the evaluation should be conducted by a licensed psychologist or licensed neuropsychologist who has a doctoral degree in psychology and training and expertise in neuropsychology.<\/p>\n<p>It isn&#8217;t unusual for a psychometrist, usually a person with a master&#8217;s degree in psychology, to do the testing under the &#8220;supervision&#8221; of the psychologist who holds the PH.D. or E.D.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This should be made clear to the patient and\/or parent before the evaluation.<\/strong>\u00a0 This does not always happen.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A Common Practice<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is a very common practice to have a &#8220;tech&#8221; administer the evaluations.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The psychologist <em>interprets<\/em> the results.<\/p>\n<p>This means that the psychologist does not observe the child&#8217;s behavior, comments, etc. when the testing is being administered to the child.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ask These Questions<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before you choose an independent testing agency, you should ask the following questions:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1.<\/strong> Who administers and interprets the testing measures?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> Will someone attend the IEP meeting to support their results?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If so, is the cost of that included in the testing, or is there a separate charge?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>3.<\/strong> Will the person who administers and interprets the testing be willing to testify at a subsequent hearing or court case regarding their test results.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If so, is the cost of that included in the testing, or is there a separate charge?<\/p>\n<p>You would be amazed at the answer you get.<\/p>\n<p>You would also be amazed at the number of professionals who are perfectly willing to administer and interpret the testing \u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">but answer an unqualified &#8220;No&#8221; to attending the IEP meeting or testifying at a hearing or in court.<\/p>\n<p>Read more about education, training, and credentials for evaluators in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/blog\/?p=11659\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Is it Time to Have Your Child Evaluated? <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/blog\/?p=11659\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/blog\/?p=11659<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/bks\/aat\/index.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px; float: left; margin-right: 20px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/bks\/aat\/img\/aat.cover.130.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"109\" height=\"142\" \/><\/a>Learn what to expect, how to prepare, and how to find a good evaluator.<\/p>\n<p>Get answers to over 200 frequently asked questions about assessments, evaluations, and tests in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/bks\/aat\/index.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Wrightslaw: All About Tests and Assessments<\/span><\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/bks\/aat\/index.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/bks\/aat\/index.htm<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I paid for a private neuropsychological evaluation.
