She ignored our suggestions and says she doesn&#8217;t believe the issues we have at home are a problem at school.<\/p>\n<p>Her teacher said she wanted only very limited goals so my daughter is not overwhelmed. She says this will leave time to work on other things that won&#8217;t be part of the goals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where does the law say that a teacher can revise the IEP and base the goals only on what she sees in the classroom?<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Use Your Law Book<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/store\/selaw2.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">special education law book<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/store\/selaw2.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/store\/selaw2.html<\/span><\/a>\u00a0 the legal requirements in IDEA about IEPs begin on p. 99.<\/p>\n<p>The federal implementing regulations specifically about IEPs start on p. 245.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Search Wrightslaw<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Use the google search box on any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Wrightslaw.com<\/span><\/a> page.<\/p>\n<p>Search for these terms &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">revise IEP, goals, unique needs, present levels, modifications, parent participation, parent input<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Learn about Present Levels<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>IDEA requires the IEP to include a statement of the child&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/idea\/art\/iep.roadmap.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance<\/span><\/a>. Your daughter&#8217;s goals should be based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/nltr\/13\/nl.0402.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Present levels<\/span><\/a> &#8211; her strengths and weaknesses and unique needs.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Presents levels require objective test data (although they may include some information from teacher observations in class).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">YOU are Part of the Team that Revises the IEP<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/store\/aaieps.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000000; margin-bottom: 5px; float: right; margin-left: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/bks\/aaiep\/cover.92x119.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"92\" height=\"116\" \/><\/a>The teacher doesn&#8217;t revise the IEP &#8211; the IEP Team revises the IEP based on your daughter&#8217;s test data and needs. Review Chapter 8 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/store\/aaieps.html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Wrightslaw: All About IEPs.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You are a key participant on the IEP team. Your input is very important to team decisions and should be discussed and considered by the whole team at the meeting (not just considered by the teacher as a &#8220;suggestion&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Learn about parent input and requests at IEP meetings and what the school is required to do.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Do Your Homework<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Read and learn about your rights and your daughter&#8217;s rights, her disability, the IEP process, and your parental role.<\/p>\n<p>You should be front and center at the IEP meeting held to review and revise your daughter&#8217;s IEP.
