SUMMARY:Special Education Advocacy Summit (SEAS) 2026
DESCRIPTION:This two-and-a-half-day special education advocacy training program held at the St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio\, Texas\, will begin with a reception on Wednesday evening\, July 22\, 2026\, and conclude on Saturday afternoon\, July 25\, 2026. Hotel accommodations are downtown on San Antonio’s historic River Walk. The Special Education Advocacy Summit (SEAS) is sponsored by Connell Michael\, LLP and Wrightslaw. \nThe program will include approximately 13 sessions on applicable laws\, ethics\, best practices in advocacy\, case strategies and dispute resolution procedures\, taught by national leaders in the field. \nThe purpose of the SEAS program is to provide training in special education advocacy for advocates\, law students\, new attorneys and attorneys who are new to special education law. \nProceeds from the summit will support the Center for Legal and Social Justice\, which provides free legal services from attorneys and second- and third-year law students to income-qualified clients in San Antonio and South Texas. Students enjoy hands-on experience in all aspects of case handling under the direct supervision of a faculty member of St. Mary’s University School of Law. \nAttendees will be selected via an application process. Applications will be reviewed on a bi-weekly rolling basis until the class is full. Early applications are recommended as the class size is limited. \nAttorneys: $990 (CLE credit is offered) \nAdvocates\, Educator/Advocates\, non-attorneys and non-credit-seeking law students: $825 \nTwo or more advocates or attorneys from the same organization/office will receive a 10% discount on each registration. The registration fee includes an opening reception\, all lunches and scheduled breaks and over $250 of materials\, including books and multimedia training from Wrightslaw\, books by author Patricia L. Johnson Howey (M.Jur. ’24)\, as well as other valuable resources. In general\, educational and training expenses are tax deductible. DESCRIPTION:Registration is now closed. \nThe St. Mary’s University School of Law is presenting the Special Education Advocacy Summit (SEAS)\, a two and one-half day training program hosted by the Center for Legal and Social Justice and co-sponsored by Wrightslaw and Connell Michael\, LLP. \nThe training program takes place in San Antonio\, TX from July 23\, 2025 to July 26\, 2025. \nThe purpose of the Special Education Advocacy Summit (SEAS) is to provide training in special education law and advocacy for experienced advocates\, law students\, new attorneys\, and attorneys who are new to special education law. Proceeds from the summit will support the Center for Legal and Social Justice\, which provides free legal services from attorneys and second and third year law students to income-qualified clients in San Antonio and South Texas. Students enjoy hands-on experience in all aspects of case handling under the direct supervision of a faculty member of St. Mary’s University School of Law. \nThe 2025 Special Education Advocacy Summit (SEAS) will include approximately thirteen sessions on applicable laws\, ethics\, best practices in advocacy\, strategies in working with parents and schools\, and dispute resolution procedures\, taught by national leaders in the field. \nThe Summit will begin with Orientation and Registration on Wednesday evening\, July 23\, 2025. Pete Wright will be presenting: Special Education and Juvenile Justice. \nThe focus is related to children with disabilities who are also involved in the juvenile justice system. Pete worked in Virginia’s juvenile justice system for 10 years prior to attending law school\, first as a juvenile training school houseparent\, living on-site. Later\, Pete worked as a juvenile probation officer in Richmond\, VA. In that capacity his caseload consisted of children living in housing projects who had committed major felonies. As an attorney\, Pete specialized in representing those same children before the juvenile courts and in special education due process hearings. \nThe two hour training is open to the public. Attorneys will receive CLE credits (2.0) which have been approved in more than 20 states\, including California and New York. CLEs are pending in other states. \nPete’s prior program for TRT CLE in January titled “Children with Disabilities and Special Education Law\,” is available now\, as a 24/7 download. Pete Wright will be presenting this special education law LIVE telecast. \nRepresenting a child with a disability is a rewarding and frightening task. Family\, friends\, and neighbors may have a child with a disability and look to you\, an attorney\, as someone who can provide simple guidance. \nThis course will discuss the common issues that are present in special education disputes and supply legal remedies. Pete Wright will introduce the course material with an overview of the three statutes and common issues leading to disputes between parents and school districts. Following this will be the acronyms\, definitions\, cases\, and statutes relevant to special education law. The material will provide more depth on common issues such as eligibility for services\, IEPs\, Discipline\, and the remedies and procedures parents and attorneys must follow in special education cases. \nAttorneys of all levels are encouraged to attend this course to learn how to represent a child with a disability. Those attorneys who are unfamiliar with this area of law\, as well as experienced civil rights litigators in this evolving field of discrimination law\, will especially benefit from the contents of this course. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe IDEA’s principles and key elements\, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act\, and the Americans with Disabilities Act\nDetermine which law to use to resolve a dispute amicably to the child’s benefit or whether to litigate in the appropriate forum to secure a remedy that benefits the child with a disability\nEvaluate the intellectual and educational achievement test data\, such as IQ\, reading comprehension\, standard\, and subtest scores\, to determine whether a child is eligible for an Individual Educational Program (IEP) or “Section 504” Plan\nLearn how to conclude whether or not a legal violation exists and\, if one is present\, which law is the appropriate relief vehicle – IDEA\, Section 504\, or the ADA\nExplore the evolving issues in special education case law that are expected to increase the frequency of federal court jury trials and verdict outcomes\n\nThis presentation has more than 20 approved states and more state pending and will be available from TRT CLE as a 24/7 download at a later point in time.
