In developing IEPs, use the “IDEA mission statement” as your long-term goal. - Pete Wright.

The purpose of IDEA is to meet the unique needs of your child - not the class, not the teacher, not the school, not the district budget.

Do not accept these statements from the school.

  • We don't have to do it.
  • We don't have money in the budget.
  • We can't make exceptions.
  • We have never done that before.

In this issue of the Special Ed Advocate learn about the school's responsibility to provide your child with an education tailored to his unique needs and to prepare your child for further education, employment and independent living. Find the legal authority in IDEA.

We hope you will forward this issue to other friends, families, or colleagues.

Unique Needs are Changing, We Need a New IEP!

This child's IEP is only for communication issues, but he now has serious social, emotional, and behavioral issues in school. The school is saying there is nothing they can do unless his diagnosis is changed - a new IEP could take months. What do we do NOW?

There is no excuse for the school not to act.

When the school thinks the IEP needs to be changed, the school needs to be doing the evaluation – not asking the parent to get another diagnosis.

Does Your Child Have Social Skills Needs?

My daughter has autism and needs help with social skills. Her peers avoid and tease her, so she has stopped trying to approach them. All she gets is 90 minutes of social skills counseling a month. Would this be considered a related service?

Do you know the answer... Is the school required to provide social skills training?
