Alert - Putting the Pieces Together: A Wrightslaw Special Education Law & Advocacy Training Program in Hartford, CT (October 14-15, 2005)

Please join Pete and Pam Wright for Putting the Pieces Together: Special Education Law and Advocacy Training in Meriden CT on Friday, October 14 and Saturday, October 15.

This program is sponsored by the Learning Disabilities of Connecticut and will be held at the Sheraton Four Points Meriden, 275 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450. Phone: (203) 238-2380.

Program Overview

This two-day, 12-hour program uses two texts that you will receive when you register. Registration form

What you don't know about IDEA 2004 CAN hurt you! Participants will learn about changes in IDEA 2004 including:

* New requirements for initial evaluations, reevaluations & parental consent
* New requirements for IEPs, IEP goals, IEP teams, IEP meetings
* New eligibility issues for students with specific learning disabilities
* New procedural requirements and timelines, including the “Due Process Complaint Notice” and “Resolution (IEP) Session.”

Participants will learn about requirements in No Child Left Behind including :

* Reading and research based instruction
* Highly qualified teachers
* Parental rights and options
* High stakes testing

Participants will learn how to:

* Use tests and measurements to measure progress
* Write SMART IEPs
* Use tactics and strategies for effective advocacy

You will also learn about Schaffer v. Weast, the "burden of proof" case. Oral argument in Schaffer will be heard by the U. S. Supreme Court on October 5. You will learn how the decision in Schaffer may shift the balance of power in IEP meetings and due process hearings.

This program is designed to meet the needs of parents, educators, health care providers, advocates, and attorneys who represent children with disabilities regarding special education, and is not disability specific.

Registration

Your registration fee includes two Wrightslaw books about special education law and advocacy ($45 value); breakfast, lunch and refreshment breaks, and free parking.

Fees

Member of LDA of CT:             $160.
Nonmember of LDA of CT:        $220.
Full-time student LDA member:  $100.
Full-time student nonmember:   $125. (photocopy of student ID required with registration)

Scholarships: A limited number of partial scholarships for parents are available (maximum $60.). Please call LDA to sign up.
