Elizabeth:  Can a district remove accommodations from a student with a SLD when they are in honors classes? My Daughter has only been able to achieve honor roll since being diagnosed with an SLD 3 years ago. although suspected since K. We have now transitioned to high school and the guidance counselor told me that if she takes honor classes support will cease.

  1. Hello, I have a similar type question, I think. My daughter has used a calculator since 5th grade due to a math calculation deficit and ADHD. I have been told “all kids can use a calculator in this grade” (in high school) so there is no reason to document in 504 or IEP. But, the documentation is necessary because she absolutely needs it and can’t solve basic math facts (she is in HS & has average/above average IQ) without it and she will need for PSAT/SAT. Has anyone also experienced this…help!

Be sure to read the policy information from the US Dept of Ed on the prohibition against disability-based discrimination. Lot of good resources on this page.
