Shelly:  My child is 19 and taking an art class at the local community college. We have been told she will no longer qualify for service now that she is a “college student” Is this correct?

  1. Shelly, taking a class at a community college does not make a child ineligible for special ed. if your child graduated from high school with a regular diploma or she “aged out” at age 22 (age varies depending on your State), she may no longer qualify for special ed services.

Check your state special ed regs re: age issue, or contact your State Parent Info and Training Center for reliable info and help. (http://www.parentcenterhub.org/find-your-center/).
