An evaluation will help you develop:

  • a road map for the future

A privately obtained evaluation should answer your questions and include specific recommendations about what your child needs.

Choose an evaluator  independent evaluator in the private sector who has expertise in your child’s disability, is independent of the school district, and who is willing to work with the school staff.

The evaluator may identify professionals who can help your child.

Or, your child’s school may ask for consent to evaluate your child to determine if they are eligible for special education services and accommodations.

Who Can Conduct an Evaluation?

The evaluation will be conducted by an examiner who has a master’s degree or doctoral degree in education or psychology.

One examiner or several specialists who have expertise in specific areas may be involved.

What Education and Training Do Evaluators Have?  

It depends.

A psycho-educational evaluation should be conducted by an examiner who has a master’s or doctoral degree in education, clinical psychology, or school psychology.

A neuropsychological evaluation should be conducted by a licensed psychologist or licensed neuropsychologist who has a doctoral degree in psychology and training and expertise in neuropsychology.

Required State Credentials

Qualifications of evaluators vary between the public and private sectors and from state to state.

Evaluators should have the credentials required by the laws of your state. They should be trained according to the requirements of test publishers.

Professionals should be willing to answer questions about their education, training, and experience.

You should check references and review credentials.

  1. How can I have my child tested by school officials when he is above age 3-4? There seems to be no timely process available withing the district policy to request and execute psychological testing, nor accept psychiatric diagnoses from psychiatric (MD) physicians who write letters to parents and school staff clearly stating their qualified psychiatric diagnoses.

    I am extremely frustrated by the seemingly “resist testing'” policy I am experiencing within my child’s school district.

    As a parent, if I am not fully satisfied with a 504 accommodations plan to assist my child with academic endeavor, do I have a right to request and receive immediate assessment attention from school officials??

    • Yes. Put your request in writing and the school district will either have to evaluate or provide you with prior written notice as to why they are not evaluating. Once you have signed the consent form for an evaluation, the school district will have a set amount of time (in my state it is 60 calendar days, not including weeks when school is out for the entire week but it varies by state) to complete the evaluation. There is not a timeline; however, as to when they have to have the eligibility meeting (again, this is in GA and may be different in your state).

    • What I would do is call the school district office and ask for the special education coordinator or the “child-find” coordinator. Tell them that you want your child evaluated for special ed services.

      Write down the date, time and person you talked to, and a summary of your discussion (preferably in your note book that you keep to log all of these interactions.)

      Then follow up with an email or letter to that individual summarizing your discussion, i.e. that you want your child evaluated under Child-Find for special-ed services.
